Re: Bar conversion with pics
I think it's 408 or something, usual easy-working easy-welding cheap exhaust grade.
However, they've done a decent job of it and I've seen 80,000 mile SV's with the stock system on that have never had any p*ssing about and total winter neglect. Some other bikes systems would have been swiss cheese in a fraction of the time! So, they don't rot.

Re: Bar conversion with pics
It has been a busy couple of days since my lovely wifey bought me a present the other day, a nice bottle of Optiglanz, after it was recommended by Dizzy. So with my fingers worn to stubs by polishing I attacked the exhaust with the new spray and it came up good. Ten years of grime in places just burned off and now my front and rear header pipes are smooth and even shiny.
So next things on the wish list are a belly pan, a Sat Nav and a couple of other bits of shiny stuff. Some dark part of me craves a GSXR fork swap, but I am not sure that I have the technical ability to do such a thing and I certainly do not have the income. Time to start selling kisses to Sailors on the beach again then until I can afford it!

Bar conversion with pics
Looking great
Could you take a pic of the other side of your hugger? Looks nice from that side. Can you remember where you got it? Cost? |

[QUOTE=Jayneflakes;2896754] a nice bottle of Optiglanz,
Whatever you do, dont get any on paint, including engine covers, or, indeed yourself. 'tis nasty stuff!

Lifting the tank requires removal of the bars and then I can just get the tank up. The gap between the tank and the risers is so slim not even a Rizla paper will fit through! Quote:
sy16 by Jayney, on Flickr You are not wrong. The can says do not breath in the vapour and sadly I got a slight a whiff. I thought my nose was going to burn out! Just horrible.

Re: Bar conversion with pics
This week I have mostly been sat on my bed staring into space and feeling rather poorly, so once I started to feel a little better, what better thing is there to do than play with my bike? Sadly I am not fit enough to ride, but I was fit enough to give her a clean and a polish.
I also cut off the irritating and stupid heat shield that sits below the engine case, a heat shield that has rattled for the last few months and finally got to me, so it was out with the angle grinder and off with the tabs. Underneath was ten years of filth and corrosion and even two goes with the optiglanz was not enough to get it shiny again. So at some point I need to hit it hard with the emery cloth and polish out the nasty bits. Talking of Optiglanz, I have given the others half's ZRX stainless exhaust a going over. It was great fun to see the silver colour simply just return as we watched only seconds after a spray. I dread to think what is in it to cause such a reaction, but it gets my vote. I also decided to fix the damn hugger too. Someone who shall remain nameless had the hugger fitted before I bought it and rather than use nice stainless nuts and bolts, they used rubbish cheese ones and these have rusted badly. So when one of them snapped and fell out, I knew that I had to fix it. So once again I got out the drill and drilled out two bolts and then cut the last one off with the grinder. So now that the hugger is off, I can replace the rusty bolts, only the bolts run through rubber mounting grommets and I have no idea where to get replacements from. I shall have a chat with my local chap on Tuesday when he opens again after Bank Holiday, but my other option is to use the same rubber bits and refit with stainless bolts. Another way I have considered is to simply hard fix it down with some nice shiny anodised Aluminium bolts and not use the rubber mounts at all. What would the mighty Org think of such a practice? Cheers folks.
