This Belgium thing----
I suspect that it is a precurser to banning all facial coverings for everyone,a bit like testing the water or softening up the people so they are more receptive to the far more draconian laws that will follow. The reason for this is that we now have very effective automatic facial recognition technology available, but it must have clear view of the face.We do now live in the big brother society as foreseen by George Orwell so we must expect a legal framework to suit.

I dont accept it at all, just pointing out how I see it.Im old enough to remember when there would have been riots in Trafalgar Square and missiles aimed at Downing St to prevent things which are seen as normal and acceptable today.Just like George Orwell predicted.

What is the obsession with banning things? Oh, it offends somebody, it could conceivably be dangerous in the hands of an idiot, a paedophile could use it to gratify themselves - BAN IT.

If I want to walk around in a pretty dress (and goatee), or with a cap on AND a hood (rather than washing my hair!) or - God forbid - butt naked: Why not? Same for burqas. If your husband is such a pig to make you dress like that, just because someone might possibly be attracted to you, or his mates would take the mick - DUMP HIM. If you want to cover your face for whatever reason, YOUR CHOICE, not anyone else's. Other people might find it difficult to communicate with you, particularly if you aren't fluent in English, or consider you a security risk. That is the choice you make covering your face, don't whinge, it's a valid point. Your face, your choice.

All this "British culture" and black and white b*llocks is mainly racism. The sooner we are shot of these petty divisions the better. Or do we have to start piling more bodies up at the end of WW3?

+1. It's all politics and people use religion as a means of recruitment/justfication/financial support etc. Not because they're Muslims that went a bit too far and decided to blow sh*it up.

Or perhaps its because they believe they're doing right by covering themselves up. Each to their own, but you can't accuse them of having stuff to hide.

Like I said in my earlier post, if the law is with all facial coverings in a public place (burka, balaclava, etc) being banned due to minimise criminal activity then fine. If it's specific to the burka then that is an issue imo. People leave their countries because they want a better life. A better life is where they are free to practise their own faith and live in peace, whilst respecting the traditions of that country.

Walking round London with a burka isn't disrespecting this countries values. Walking round Saudi in a bikini would be.

Also comparing this country to 'oh what would the Saudis do if we went over there and....". Well why compare to a country like that which does much worse. We should always strive for the highest standards in freedom of speech and practise - provided it does not affect others.
I'm personally not a fan of the burka, and find it to be incompatible within most social settings. Still though, the fact that some women go for the ninja look really I couldn't care less about, and its up to them. Is there an opposite to indecent exposure?! No so what's the beef.
Thats just it they dont!

Wohoooo a nibble

Refer to Dicky Tickers posts really, not learning the language, making no attempts to mingle with the native population, demanding their local culture is put into english law (extreme case i know but its happened!).

I've no problem with foreigners to this land, they can and do bring useful skills knowledge and benefit the UK, but the minority dont and its the minority i have a problem with.

I have no problem with facial recognition as it is how people know who I am.As Bri W says natural facial hair is just natural.
Let me ask one simplistic question----If everybody walked about wearing a face covering, burqa, veil, ski mask what ever, how do you know who everybody is?
Many references to foreign culture and historical facts but do we want to go back in time or go forward with todays modern world and the benefits of its technology. Even burqa wearers take advantage of our progress so why hold on to and object if you want to live in a modern society. These things have a place in the past or for ceremonial gatherings but hardly everyday life.
I am Scottish and when wearing national dress I have an ornamental dagger in my sock but if I walked about with it in every day life I would be nicked for an offensive weapon, not the same as a veil but it is a bit of my culture as the veil is theirs.Still according to some views an infringement on my freedom and civil liberty but I can conduct a normal life without it,the same as they could without a veil .

You been to Bradford recently?

I dislike the idea of racism, and I'd hate to become so narrow minded myself, but if anyone can go around such areas and not harbour some antipathy you are a better man than I.
An amusing contradiction you hear a lot around here is "oh, I'm not racist, I just don't like pakis".

It's not racism, it's bugger all to do with the colour of the skin but a dislike for the 'culture' and mannerisms. Of course all the left-wing southerners decry it as disgusting fascism... but of course, they've never been to Bradford.

Serious social commentary:
