Didn't older Brit bikes used to have separate wires going to each device - ie a positive and a negative wire instead of one wire and a chassis reference?

If they did it was before my time, but could well believe it to be the case as electrics would have been so much simpler then. My push bike dynamo was wired like that (50s-60s)

I had BSA that was positive earth, not 100% sure of the reason why it was wired that way tbh, I was once told that super tankers were wired positive earth in order to keep crustaceans/ barnacles to a minimum from sticking to the Hull!
Don't know if it's true and never felt the need to look it up but interesting theory. Perhaps BSA thought it might keep the rust at bay! ... clearly didn't work.

It was the convention back in the day, we inherited a 56 Hillman Mink - that was positive 'earth' too

if everyone changed the name Ground to Common (COM) in when referring to DC then we would all get along better. we can keep the word Earth in AC.

vehicle chassis connections be it positive or negative are just an extension of the battery terminal they are connected to not an earth or a ground. they are a common that is used as a 'tie point' to supply voltage easier.

lets take a positive COM (commonly called positive earth) setup but use a ship as an example. one would tie the positive to the metal hull then run a negative wire throughout the ship. the negative wire then becomes the ''live'' wire even though its negative. if you can get your noggin around that then you understand vehicle wiring.

Actually a sunny day here in Shropshire for a change, that cool breeze is still around though, so you need to stay in the sun to keep warm.

That's because I'm back to work tomorrow. I get to look at the sun out of the shop window.

I've just had my heating on, the nearest weather station to me is RAF Donna Nook which declared the temp to be 9°C. Raining? of course it's bloody raining.
