Gripe of the day - What is yours?

I have one of those multi tools! The lad bought it 10 years ago unbeknown to me when we moved to a house with a large garden. It has had many bodges when bits have broken. It needs a replacement carb (£6) every few years as the seals and diaphragm give up the ghost but overall its been a God send. The chainsaw attachment on the end of the long pole is great for controlling the over large apple and damson trees. The strimmer with a new head is great too. I rarely use the hedge cutter as my battery powered cutter is more user friendly. Totally concur re cutting hedges during the nesting season - I know of two nests in our hedges at the moment - but none in the six bird boxes scattered around!

Went out today in unpleasant weather, came home with a wet stomach and a wet crotch. It looks like both jacket and trousers have failed me at being waterproof.

I don't suppose anyone knows if it's worth re-waterproofing the trousers, or am I just fooling myself? (They're ancient Rukkas).

I use GT85 PTFE chain lube to re-waterproof all my riding gear.

Done outside as although it's not an unpleasant smell it is pervasive until it dissipates which can take an hour or so if outside, longer inside.

You could try Nixwax cleaner and then re-proofer appropriate for the material.

Being Rukka, i am guessing it's a laminated Gortex suit? Are you sure it's not a zipper that has leaked in the weather somewhere?

If they are Rukka ,yes. Rukka gear is top of the range gear isn't it?

I've used the Nikwax Techwash and then Nikwax TX Direct on my pretty old Rukka stuff, which seems to work OK. You must not use detergents.

Having said that, this stuff has come out since I used the Nikwax, haven't tried it but it is approved by Rukka and the reviews sound positive so ........

I'll confirm that. Traditional detergents have wetting agents to draw water deep into the fabric in the wash and get it really clean. Traces of this stay behind on the material after the wash and draw water into the fabric in the rain. Tech wash doesn't have wetting agents and is a lot more gentle.


Dirt in fabric can act as a wetting agent too, so you do need to wash waterproofs before adding Nixwax etc. If you use a washing machine to wash them then you'll need to get it really clean first too. Usually an empty cleaning wash with the machine as hot as it will go to get rid of all traditional deteregent residue.



Don't ask me how I learnt about wetting agents. Suffice to say I have a Goretex pro jacket that wasn't much use not long after buying it. Luckily just a regular jacket and not expensive bike kit.
