Re: Gripe of the day - What is yours?
I think the difference, at least with respect to the situation in Canada, is that these issues aren't ancient history. Victims/survivors of the residential school system are alive today, some younger than me (and I don't consider myself old). There are probably few Canadian aboriginal families today who haven't been directly impacted by this an other similar policies. It's much more than a vague notion of something that happened hundreds of years ago.
As a Canadian, I think I can say with reasonable certainty that most of us (even since my parent's generation), would consider Canada a fair, just, inclusive and progressive country, largely unencumbered by historical issues (for lack of a better word), classism, and without the broad (or at least open) racism seen in the US. I think most Canadians take pride in how (we believe, at least) Canada is perceived as a nation in the world. That this has happened (as well as certain other issues that have come to light recently) within our lifetimes, and gone largely unnoticed, or ignored, will be a source of shame and embarrassment. On the other hand, I think it's an opportunity (and one that Canada can rise to) to accept responsibility, start healing the rift, and support our fellow Canadians in reclaiming their language and culture, and building pride and prosperity (in whatever form they might choose) in their communities.

The past cannot be changed ... fact! No current living member on this planet is responsible in any way for what happened prior to their birth.
If as much effort was put into building a positive future as is put into trying to eradicate the past ... we might just get somewhere. |

We have it here and we're keeping it. There's not enough for anyone else so you'll all have to put up with the rain and cold.

It was also the British who abolished slavery first, and spent an absolute fortune with the Navy blockading slave ports on west coast of Africa ( IIRC 10 years ) to make sure no slaves got shipped anywhere. British and Dutch navy also devastated the Barbary pirates - making Europe and UK safe from them.
