What small car?
So... It's time to look vaguely at buying a car again. I'd pretty much decided to get some unglamorous diesel hatch, since I'll still be uising the bike most of the time... But a small space has opened in Chez Northwind's driveway, into which a decent size car won't quite go. Used to hold one of those Corsa vans.
So, back to the drawing board. I've got no car licence just now, only got age and postcode in my favour insurance wise, and I'd like to keep things fairly cheap. What it's got to do is: Be cheap, ideally under £3000 including insurance Not be desirable enough that I end up modifying it, OR nice enough that I don't want to, OR cheap enough that I can afford to Be fairly reliable and cheap to run- high-ish maintenance requirements aren't a problem, but breaking down on a monday morning would be. Ideally, big enough to tow a bike on a trailer- but that's not really a requirement And the big one: "Not rubbish". Though that might be a reach. So, come on wise people, advise me! My inner muppet is demanding a Mk 1 Golf, or a proper VW Beetle, or an oldschool Pug hatch... But anything sporty would probably cost me more than I want to pay insurance wise. Is there anythign I can do to avoid diesel Astra hell?

Sensible option...
Seat Ibiza. Very happy with mine, lovely interiors, lots on them. You might get a newer shape one for the money. This is the sensible option tho. Other than that a Clio, but feels less durable than the Seat to me. I also liked 205s. |

+ 1 for the Ibiza (make sure it's got a VW engine on it), or a Skoda Fabia (again, make sure it's not the crappy old model).
- 1 for the Clio and just about anything french or italian, especially Fiat / Alfa Romeo (breakdowns on monday mornings galore). |
