I have a canon EF 50mm f1.8. It's a plastic built lens (including mount) with a fairly slow and noisy focusing motor (compared to USM, fine in isolation). It also suffers a bit of CA when wide open (f1.. However, for under £100 it lets you take nice pictures in low light. It gets sharper when stopped down a little (f2.2 or so and up). I'd say the 1.4 is probably a better bit of glass, but it's over 3 times the price!

I like mine, and often use it to hand round at parties on the front of the camera, though on a crop body like the 20d, it could do with being a little wider for that purpose. I'll send you a link to some of my photos with it on FB.

In terms of IS VS wide apature, both help you take clear shots in low light, but IS doesn't help get your shutter speed up, so people moving are still blurry. For a portrait lens (the 50mm makes a lovely portrait lens) it's also nice to be able to throw the background out of focus, and F2.8 and below help with that.

Excuse my ignorance, i know very little about this subject atm.

If the DX is being used as Nikon uses it, then it's for DSLRs with cropped (1.5x ratio) sensors, and yes, your D90 is one of them.

Have a quick check:
Tamron use Di (Crop/35mm) and Dii (Crop only)
Sigma use Dx(Crop/35mm) and Dc (Crop only)

The whole Crop / 35 mm (full size, 24 x 36 mm) thing is about lens coverage for a given sensor size. The so-called "digital" lenses are usually designed to be used in lower end digital SLRs, with small size sensors (APS-C, 18 x 24 mm or thereabouts - Nikon D40, D60, D70, D80, D90, D100, D200, D300, D3000 and D5000).
This means they can be smaller in size (lighter and cheaper) since they don't have to cover as much area as the 'full size' ones (FX on Nikon speak). Confusion begins when Sigma use Dx for their 'full size' range while Nikon calls their 'crop range' DX.

In a nutshell:

You can use both on the D90, only 'crop' lenses will probably be cheaper, lighter, and have worse corner performance when compared to the full size lenses.

Thanks
hah, yeah I realised the implications of posting a pic of my tool with white stuff stuck to the tip
I can only imagine its plasterboard, hadn't noticed it till I came to take the picture but it added a bit of texture

I'm still impressed with how close I can get with that lens, got quite a few taken for my project 365, so when February is updated there should be quite a gallery hehe.

Some cracking entries in this months run, need to get out of the house with mine sometime.
