Rattle can spraying
Morning all. I have a question on rattle can technique. I wanted to paint my lower triple. I cleaned and degreased it, sprayed it with etch primer, then with Hammerite matte balck. It looked lovely, but the finish is incredibly fragile! I just lightly bumped it a cement surface and it chipped off! I imagine stones/road crud will destroy it. How does one get a tough finish?

Re: Rattle can spraying
As Shiftin Gear says Rattle cans are single pack paint and are not that robust. Most commercial paints are ,"Two-Pack" which is Paint and hardener. We use,"Triple Pack" paints now on Aircraft.
However High Temp engine Matt Black is more robust than most Rattle can paint so you can give that a go and it's also easy to maintain/Respray when it looks shoddy. Word of warning though. If you ever going to spray a different paint onto another you should make a small test piece and spray that with the original paint and let cure and then paint on top of that with the new paint to see if there's a reaction as not all paints are compatible with each other. Paint spraying in all forms is a process and has more variables than people think and cannot be rushed.

Re: Rattle can spraying
put a 2 pack matt lacquer on it. the stuff is hard as fek. you can get it made up into spray cans but you must use it pretty much straight away when you get it as they mix the hardener in with the lacquer.

Ive used Simonize Tough Black to good effect. Looks great and is tough enough for a bottom yoke.

Re: Rattle can spraying
Por50 is made in spray cans now. Kinda expensive, like $20 per can. You can also bake small items in your oven. Not advisable if married.....ask me how I know.

Re: Rattle can spraying
Thanks all, I'm going to sandblast it back down to metal and try some Simonize Tough Black. I'll let you know how it goes.

Re: Rattle can spraying
Wow, that looks epic. But I don't see anyone selling it in the UK? Nevermind in black.

Re: Rattle can spraying
Rustoleum make some great paints.
https://www.promain.co.uk/metal-pain...ant-paint.html I used some of their Synthetic oil based Green Rattle can on a Honda CX Colour change I did, It's more robust than normal Rattle can paint but still needs care if used on a fuel tank as although it won't melt if fuel gets on it it does mark but the marks can be compounded out so the paint is,"Serviceable".Of course fuel tanks should have Twin-Pack activated paint or clear-coat applied but it's a decent half-way house cheap solution.
