Back up...

1) Did you do this on a whim, or had you checked the oil level, on a flat, level surface with the engine off, and found the level in the sight glass was low enough to need 1.5L to bring it up to between low and high levels?
2) Did you use 10w/40 semi synth motorcycle engine oil or gearbox oil?

Hi. It was on a flat all night. There was no oil in the sight glass and it took 1.5 litres of 10/40 semi.synth car oil

Better the wrong oil than no oil.

Did you hold the bike up level when you checked or was this with the bike on the side stand?

If you use car oil, my understanding is the clutch will not like it.
