The other thing of course is to try to avoid using a DEBIT card at all for such transactions, a CREDIT card means you have the credit card company in between you, they will have plenty of clout and don't tend to take kindly to being abused. Using a debit card amounts to handing over cash.
You may well have reason to have used a debit card, but try to avoid it when dealing with "unknown quantities" like insurance brokers or unknown online retailers.

I'll happily pay a bit extra for insurance as long as the company is well known and has a good reputation and reviews.

Your experience is good info for others, thanks for sharing.

Absolutely. I always check the insurer & underwriter out before i take out any policy. Usually if it looks to be to much of a good price, there's always a catch. Especially with those on the price comparison sites.

I've been very surprised they haven't gritted round here yet (South Cheshire). I'm sure they will soon.

Thought the world was ending when this appeared up the road on Sunday night. It flared out the PTZ camera

Didn't know that about debit cards, I thought they gave the same protection as credit cards. I don't have a credit card and pay by debit card or paypal.
I have been through the house insurance carry on recently and have gone with the broker who is also the same company as my financial adviser. Other quotations were much lower but thought there must be some catch. Would have to start looking into it weeks in advance to be able to compare like with like. One company was asking stupid questions like 'do your external door locks open from both sides ?' !!!

Yep, if I'm at all dubious or buying something over £100 I always spend someone else's money (credit card) once I'm happy I move over my funds from debit.

It's not the stupidest question (if they were going to give you a discount for every non external facing lock), some locks don't have a key at the other side (think they call them passage locks) which means it's harder to lockpick or snap them. Obviously that wouldn't be all doors though

10 Downing Street has one of those. It can only be opened from the inside.
