Default How loud is too loud?

At our local bike night conversation frequently has to be paused whilst departing bikes make their exit, not through choice but because it's impossible to hear anything. I should add these bikes are not Harleys.

It looks like the guv'n'mint have decided to check on this by installing "acoustic" cameras on a trial basis:

In Lincolnshire low flying fighter aircraft are not uncommon, I wonder if they'll get a ticket , also if you were riding past an acoustic camera and a jet flew over would it trigger the camera?

Or if a few bikes go past together? How does it know which one is the loud one? Really can't see how this can work.

+ If it's measuring decibel levels, bass registers higher than higher frequencies, so a screaming IL4 (which I imagine is what most rural communities are bothered by) may be measured as quieter than a mellower V-Twin.

As technology develops this sort of enforcement becomes inevitable and most people probably agree that the extremely noisy vehicles should be banned. The problem will as ever be mission creep as the techy infrastructure needs ever more fines to pay for itself and the stazi element get their teeth into it.

I'm all for slip-on exhausts and full systems on bikes - what I'm not all for is the tiny coke tin sized GP Stubby cans from the likes of SC Project. I made a fella on a fireblade with one on ride behind me once, Couldn't hear my own exhaust over his.... Eyewateringly loud

Also, depending on engine size the legal limit is between 82 and 86DB for a motorcycle, seemingly some forces round up to 90 for wear and tear. < Has two separate offences, 1)altering system to increase noise or 2)avoidance of excessive noise

Most non-bikers always put 'noisy' prefix in front of motorbikes, they rarely just say 'motorbikes'. My B-I-L Yamaha 1300 V twin cruiser is eye-wateringly loud ( pretty much straight through pipes ), can hear him 3 streets away, the usual 'a loud bike is a safe bike' is trotted out - but he has a headlight like a candle in a jam-jar and has never added and lights to any of his bikes to improve his visibility to other road users - I really do hope he gets a fine.

It's the cars around here which have the noisiest exhausts.

I'm guessing they could use the doppler effect to isolate vehicles passing the camera and fixed external noises, and maybe video to help provide evidence, but I can't see it being clear enough for a penalty. What happens if two bikes pass at the same time?

On the other hand, if it sent an automated producer, that would be better balanced than a fine.

There's a bike bay just up the road from where I work. The noisiest buggers are kids on 125's, scooters with chambers and Harley's with straight pipes. Drives me mad as we have the shop doors open and it kills any conversation.
My biggest grumble is with light planes. Open exhausts flying regularly over populated areas and of course the sound travels further as there's nothing to suppress it.

What a joke, Heathrow is about to change its flight paths and expose hundreds of thousands of people to far more noise than road vehicles make, all supported by Chris Grayling, at the same time he supports noise cameras for road vehicles.

Chris Grayling is a lying hypocrite, who is unfortunately my MP, so I can say with authority he is also f*ing useless.
