The OP tried jump start from his car, which has a lot more cranking amps than a bike battery.

Modern batteries are shipped dry charged which gives them indefinite shelf life without discharging and the seller adds electrolyte just before delivery, which revives the charge. I normally hook my charger up to new batteries but have found the green 'charged' light comes on within a very short time which convinces me that they are at least 95% charged anyway.

I think I'm just about sorted now.

First of all, I charged up the new battery as advised. That in itself didn't make much difference (still the same noise from starter relay). However, when I tried bump starting it again - it worked.

However, it still wouldn't start on the button. So, what's better than multi meter ? A mate with a multi meter who knows what readings to expect, that's what.

So the current (sorry) thinking is that it's not electrical but a sticky starter motor. So, that's my evening planned.

Hopefully the final instalment will confirm that later.

I now have a fully functioning SV again !!!!

It was indeed a sticking starter motor, so i removed, cleaned and put it back in - fired first time. With the new battery it did so with a bit more oomph too.

Not sure why it stuck - maybe lack of use recently ? Who knows, but I'll watch it over the next few weeks.

Thanks for the advice - saved me a load of time (and I learned a bit for next time too).

Excellent news! Is there anyway you can get some grease in there to lube it up a little?

I suppose there's space to put a little in, but I don't know if you should or shouldn't, to be honest (not an expert by any stretch of the imagination).

All I did was to take the front cover off, spin it round a bit and shake out some crud. Very technical.

Maybe someone who knows what they're doing could answer that

May be worth getting the starter motor out and apart so you can get some switch cleaner to the relevant parts and a smear of grease on the bushes/bearings.

Good result, it is amazing how you can get misled by one thing (battery condition) when it is something else completely, well if your battery was due for replacement anyway (they don't last for ever) it isn't a bad thing that you replaced it and will get another 4 to 5 years from new one.
