Another electrical issue
I've been searching the forums for some guidance but can't find anything exactly the same.
The (original) battery on my K8 has been on the way out for a few weeks. By using it every day it just about had enough juice to start, but it was getting dodgier and dodgier by the day. Last week, it finally went. Turned over a couple times (just), and then nothing - just a click. There was enough to prime the fuel pump, but that's all. So, I got a Motobatt replacement and put it in this afternoon. The weird thing is - it hasn't made any difference. The pump primes, the dash lights up as normal, but nothing happens when I try to start it. I've checked the kill switch, but kind of stumped beyond that. Although I'm in the same position I was before I got the battery, I know it was necessary and not a waste of cash. Trouble is, I've no clue what to look at next. Any ideas / suggestions ? |

Re: Another electrical issue
Sorry if this is a stupid question but did you fully charge the new battery before you fitted it? I have a curvy so i dont know but does the fuel pump on a pointy still prime if it has a dodgy clutch switch stopping it from starting?

Re: Another electrical issue
Do you own or have use of a suitable battery charger? If not your first port of call is to get one,and also get a basic multimeter for checking the electrics.Other than that you could start by just checking all the electrical contacts, especially the battery terminals, the earth straps to frame and engine, and the lead to the starter motor.

Re: Another electrical issue
Thanks for that.
The battery is fully charged. I got it at my local bike shop and they double checked it before I left. I've got a charger if need be, but when I get home tonight I'll have a look at the various connections. Those to the battery are definitely fine, so it's the others I don't know about for sure (but they were OK before). |

Have you tried bump or jump starting the bike?

Re: Another electrical issue
Check the usual switches, clutch, side stand & kill switch.
If clutch & side stand cut outs are malfunctioning, then it could explain why it won't start on the button. Spray some wd40 into the kill switch area. Might help to check the ignition connector under the tank too

Re: Another electrical issue
Just been out in the garage for a look - it's freeeeezing.
Anyway, all connectors to the battery look ok. Connectors to the starter motor look fine. The starter relay looks clean and tidy, and the connections are solid (although that's where the noise is coming from when it won't start). The kill switch has been doused in WD40 and flicked repeatedly. I'd be soooooo embarrassed if that was the cause .... The side-stand cut-out has also been lubed up, and I've tried it with the stand up and down. Still the same, when I press the starter the lights dim and the starter relay makes a slight noise. But that's all. I think the next step is to get a cheap multi-meter and take some readings. I'll let you know the outcome - but really appreciate the suggestions so far !!! |

Re: Another electrical issue
Sounds like the starter or solenoid is goosed especially as the lights dim when you press the starter button.
Try rocking the bike back and forth in gear it could well be the starter is jammed Ryan |
