Default Cleaning chain

I have a scottoiler should I bother cleaning the gunk of the chain?

Some people say never to touch the chain as it will take all the goodness the scottoiler has put on it.

Anyone any ideas?

IMHO it should be periodically cleaned with Parafin (best stuff for the job IMHO )

If you don't clean the crap off your chain, the grit/salt & whatever else picked up on the oil of the chain will turn itself into a fine 'grinding paste' which'll kill your chain in 'no time flat'. Parafin is cheap, so no excuses

I do mine once a month/six weeks - if you ride a lot, then once a fortnight should suffice

Pour some Parafin into a suitable receptical, then (using an old paint brush,) liberally paint the parafin into all the nooks & cranies of your chain & sprockets - repeat if necessary. Leave the Parafin to evaporate, then wash the chain off with water & dry with a cloth, then re-lube (or in your case, take the bike for a spin & let the Scottoiler do its thing )

I usually just use wd40 to clean all the crap off and then re-apply a thin oil lube and then some wax after that. Is WD40 bad for o-rings? Are most chains o-ring chains.

Questions, questions!

WD40 is awfully expensive to clean a chain with IMHO

Scottoilers meant to self clean your chain, my chain looks brand new. Make sure you clean it, spin the wheel and apply a little oil for it to preoil before you take it out for a spin. Otherwise you will be running a dry chain waiting for the scottoiler to fully reoil the chain.

Make sure that when the weather gets warmer to turn the scottoiler down as the oil runs through freer in the summer than winter. To much oil makes it look like its covered in a load of black gunk cos it hasnt had time to fling off.

Works in my case, just gotta make sure you ahve the thing on the right setting.

Hmm. I usually spray it all round the chain with the bike on the paddock stand and then take a wd40 soaked rag and just clean it all. It doesn't really use that much. Plus you can pick wd40 for a quid from poundland as well.
