powered my underwater SV up and no smoke or surprises! Even the speedo seems to work and it tried to fire but has now given up. Ive probably got lots of codes to check as the FI is showing and Ive got lots of things disconnected still....

Have you drained and flushed the fuel tank? Also replace the fuel filter.

If you get it running, plan on stripping and cleaning/replacing:
  • Wheel bearings
  • Swing arm spindle
  • Rear suspension linkages
  • Forks
  • Steering head bearings

surprisingly the water appears to have avoided the tank! I think it acted as a bubble because the vent pipe comes out the bottom so the fuel and air in the tank just sat there.
If it runs then I realise there will plenty of other jobs to do but will only start on them once Ive confirmed its alive....

I wouldn't bother using the fuel that was in the tank, even if you think it's OK. Even a little bit of water in there will stop it running as it sits at the bottom and will be the first thing drawn into the fuel pump when you try and start it. Put new fuel in, disconnect the outlet pipe from the fuel tank to the injectors, and power up the ignition so the fuel is squirted out of it (obviously point it into a suitable bottle/container). You may need to drain the rail to the injectors if you're already tried firing it. Despite all the doom and gloom opinions you're actually in with quite a good chance of saving it given how soon you're started. Don't forget brakes. If the master cylinders have been under water ideally you ought to drain and replace the fluid but at least take the tops off and use a syringe or pipe to suck the fluid out of them before topping them back up with fresh fluid.

Thanks for the encouragement and yes water might explain why it fired initially and then gave up....

ok its running! Yes I had been a bit optimistic about there not being contamination in the tank - it was full of muck so had to clean pump, filter and interior. Now it doesnt sound to bad although the oil has gone a funny colour very quickly......

Get some cheap engine oil and change it then run it for a while and change it again----several times until there is no trace of water or crud in the engine. Id run some fuel treatment/redex through the system as well to ensure the fuel is clean. Then Id start on the electrics---connecters apart and contact cleaner/WD 40 everywhere.

Must feel pretty good to hear it running again

If you buy "Seafoam" engine cleaner, you can use it in the fuel AND the oil, so think I'd be chucking in a can of that (along with the multiple cheap oil changes)

You'll find it on eBay.

Sounds a bit odd to talk of luck when you've just had to empty your bike of filthy water, but as "JaxintheUk" pointed out, it could well have been alot worse with the battery fitted, so I reckon luck was on your side, er, sort of
