Perhaps it's some kind of new 'extreme' training method - you'll perform this u-turn on the edge of a cliff in the hope that fear will help you from over-running the bend.

What's next I wonder...

... practising hill starts on the edge of live volcanoes...

... emergency stops performed with the aid of snipers perhaps...

... or even bus lanes with land-mines.
