Computer Question
Fond of knowledge (THE ORG) I am returning my works laptop and would like to give it back as "clean" as possible!!
Have uninstalled anything that is not work related but how do I wipe out ANY traces of anything else left? Cheers |

Re: Computer Question
Open up a dos prompt, Format c: then yes
(Only kidding that will format the hard drive and to be honest, thats what the comapny should do when its returned. Im sure that someone will come along with a more technical answer |

Re: Computer Question
install eraser or boot&nuke etc and give it a military spec clean
It might be worthwhile running ccleaner on it first to remove traces of browsing history, last opened files, internet caches etc first. and then eraser to indelibly overwrite deleted file storage etc. boot&nuke is more for a complete wipe out

Re: Computer Question
Take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure...

Re: Computer Question
Yes the format route passed my mind but it would be naughty

Re: Computer Question
Boot from a linux live CD and then run
cat /dev/urandom > /dev/sda maybe a couple of times if you're really paranoid. |

Re: Computer Question
And you think returning a work laptop that appears to have been doctored wouldn't make them suspsious about what you used it for and then would not note it on file

Re: Computer Question
If you are confident you have un-installed / removed all personal stuff, don't worry about it. They are not gonna forensically study your hard drive to work out what you did with it. If the lappy is to be re-used (and it may not be if not up to current company spec) then the drive will be formatted and the standard build dropped on to the hard drive. If the lappy is to be sold, the hard drive will be reformatted to remove company sensitive data and a vanilla copy of windows installed. They may go beyond what I've stated above in terms of scrubbing the hard drive, but you get the picture.
