Chris8886 - seriously ill in Thailand
As some of you may know, Chris went off travelling recently and has suffered a cardiac myopathy (leading to cardiac arrest) in Bangkok. His mum contacted me today to tell what happened.
He collapsed in bar and fortunately there was an Australian nurse from Melbourne standing next to him who administered CPR though he still crashed five times on the way to hospital. The insurers have flown his parents out there and he has been transfered to the Bangkok International Heart Hospital where the treatment is superb. He is now breathing without a ventilator but in a medicated coma to aid recovery. He has just been speaking, but has a a tube still down his throat. He can move his arms and legs when asked, nod his head and move his eyelids. He has been trying to speak properly. He is still extremely ill but the signs are that he is improving. I'm sure many of you would like to send him messages to wish him well so could I ask that you email your message to me at my work address and I will then collate them all in to one big document and send it on to him care of his parents. They can then read them out to him. The email is: clare.skinner@mcc.org.uk Please don't forget to include your org name and real name so they can tell him who the messages are from. I will of course keep you updated on his progress. EDIT: And having had a look at the condition on the British Heart Foundation website, it looks like if you survive the inititial collapse then it can be treated successfully in various ways. He's a stubborn little bug*er so I'm sure he'll be giving the nurses hell in no time. On reflection - it's probably a good thing that the Aussie nurse in the bar wasn't aware he's an English cricket fan or she'd probably just have given him a kick in the ribs.

He is young - 24. I believe it is a thickening of the heart muscle and unfortunately you usually don't know you have it. Chris is very sporty and plays loads of squash and hockey.

I'll check and see if my bro in laws in Bangkok at the moment and see if he can help out anyway-he might be out in the sticks up in the rural north so might not be of any use but worth a try

Extremely shocked to hear this. Especially as he is such a sporty chap WHat an awful end to his holiday, he was clearly having a whale of a time. I opened this thinking it was going to be some sort of infection from a bite or something, not a heart attack! Keep us posted LPH.
