Merc is a top bloke, spent many an evening getting lashed with him at the Kentagon at Brands when he was racing against my mate Danny in Bemsee Powerbikes. Danny and he were best of mates off track, but on track they battled like lifetime enemies for the lead. Merc usually won, but on the occasions when Danny beat him it was a time for massive celebration, because Merc always was the faster rider really.

Start line ritual always included Danny, Rob Elsmere or Merc shouting to the other "I love you Danny Imberg/Steve Mercer/Rob Elsmere" and the other two responding in the same way to each other just as the red light was due to come on. We always shared the love.
