Default Route 66

Hi all,
I'm doing Route 66 (Chicago to LA) in September this year for 3 weeks currently by car with my other half and another couple.
I fancy doing a bit of it on a bike but its quite expensive, $150-$250 return drop off fee as soon as you cross a state line.
Has anyone done Route 66 before, any tips?

friend of mine did route 66 with his son on hired Harleys late last year, loved every minuite of it. Although his boy did crash his Harley and do a bit of damage to it.

Sorry for being a plank but what is a return drop off fee?

If you dont take it back to the same depot / hire venue you get charged a fee.

I'm only going one way, i cant turn back as it bites into my plan, you think 3 weeks is alot but its not.

That's a bit crap isn't it? That would put me off it. I wonder if there are tour companies that would advise on that?

There are some companies that specialise in motorbikes, but we have already ordered a car through Alamo for our journey. Me getting a bike will be an add on to the trip.

I'm also undecided about attempting the 72oz steak, in Amarillo!?

He's only going one way. So, unless he rides all the way back again, to drop the bike off where he picked it up, you usually have to pay a one way drop-off fee.

A few years back I did San Francisco -> New York by car and loved it! Was a great trip. Followed the SH50 - "The loneliest Highway" for a lot of the time which was great, but got onto old 66 heading up to Chicago.

No real tips though! Just have a great time

Was looking into this tonight, usually done over two weeks and costs 2.5-3.0k, per person, will have to wait awhile. Enjoy i'm sure it will be awesome, you will hear that word a lot lol. Edit, watch what you eat, i guarantee you will put on a stone, the food is brill.
