Roof cycle racks
Said good bye to the pick eventually, so now I have an Auris estate but need to sort out a bike rack. It has roof rails but at the roof bars/cycle brackets like Thule easy to get on and off? I don't want to leave stuff on there all the time knackering the aerodynamics. I'd prefer a rear rack like a Saris Bones but I think it'll obscure the lights too much.

Re: Roof cycle racks
I've got a couple of Thule roof rack mounted ones. Older version of the 598 I think. Very easy to get bikes in and out of quickly. Fairly easy to remove, but to be honest I leave them on there and haven't noticed them ruining mpg. The roofbox however, does.

Re: Roof cycle racks
Hey JR, we do Thule roof rack systems at work. They aren't cheap but they are good. They have a product finder on their website, what year and type of Auris is it? I remember the photo but not what type of roof it had (rails, flush rails, normal roof or fixpoint)

Re: Roof cycle racks
I have rails on my Focus estate and a Thule Aerobar setup for it. Had the square bar system before that but carriers have to use U-clamps on those making them more fiddly to install and noisy when on the move. The Aero system is not silent but it uses a T-track mount which is quicker/easier to add my Thule 591 bike carriers. Can have the whole thing installed in ten minutes and off again in five and the foot packs don't mark the rails at all. Highly recommended.
ps, Adam, you lazy so and so! I'm telling Greta you don't take your bars off...

Re: Roof cycle racks
Aero bars have been replaced with their Wing system. Still has t-track but offers better aerodynamics. Still a drag but better than square bars.

Re: Roof cycle racks
Auris touring sports (estate) hybrid 2017. Thanks Kenzie, I tried looking on their website but it's all a bunch of numbers and big prices. Are the square bars any disadvantage really?
Thanks Adam, Trev, they look fairly simple but that doesn't mean they are, or are quick to fit! I'd probably try leaving stuff on, but don't want something that's a PITA. |

Re: Roof cycle racks
Square bars are ok but but best to take them off when not in use. Can you post up a pic of your roof?

Re: Roof cycle racks
Just something showing the roof along the edge above the doors.

Re: Roof cycle racks
How about using something like a Sea Sucker roof mount. Instant on and off. These have been thoroughly tried and tested. Although for me I'd want a tow bar mounted carrier
