Multi bike insurance
I've never owned more than 1 bike at a time till now. Is it best (cheaper) to insure them separately or on a joint policy? I was chatting to a lady who had a couple of sportbikes and she said it was better to insure separately.
I'd appreciate your input if you have more than one bike. I should add that one bike is 3 years old and the other is 44 years old. |

Re: Multi bike insurance
I've never found multi vehicle policies to be anything other than a marketing scam.
Any time I've priced them up single policies have been cheaper. |

Re: Multi bike insurance
I've got five bikes on one policy, four on another. Total bill for the two policies is around £600. I'd suggest you would struggle to insure them individually for less?

Re: Multi bike insurance
I tried to insure a vintage bike and modern bike on the same policy but found that there are less insurers around that will handle older and new bike insurance together so it limits your options / quotes and prices tend to be high. Some won't insure anything older and others specialise in vintage. It's difficult to tell who though as often it's the actual insurance company underwriter that is assigned to you through whoever you insure with. Eg. you may be with one company but they're getting the policy for you through another company, underwriters etc.

Re: Multi bike insurance
I have 4 bikes on an Aviva multi-bike policy which costs me around £300 including all the fully comp knobs and whistles, European breakdown included.
One bike is 44yrs old, like yours, and while it is included at a declared value you tend to find the specialists can often cover these vehicles for very small sums. I did look into covering that bike separately along with another similar age bike (currently not insured) with a specialist classic bike broker, and the 2 bikes would have come in at just about £100 together. If it is a particularly valuable bike then a specialist is probably the better route with an agreed value, which they are used to handling whereas the routine insurers deal with book values usually. I was looking at using https://www.peterjamesinsurance.co.u.../classic-bikes who I believe was originally connected with https://www.footmanjames.co.uk/class...SAAEgI1PfD_BwE I have no connection nor experience with either.

Re: Multi bike insurance
I was quoted by FootmanJames, they were higher than I anticipated. (£154 FComp for 3000 miles/yr)
I thought I had got coverage by Devitts (for £73) but now I'm not so sure. They wanted proof of my NCB but my (Hastings) insurance certificate doesn't show it so I sent them a copy of the reminder which does. I've just received a weird email saying that the registrations don't match and they can only give a NCB for one policy at a time. I wonder if they don't realise that I have two bikes (they can't be that stupid). I've sent a copy of the SV insurance certificate whose number matches the reminder and tried to explain there are two bikes, two separate policies one of which has nothing to do with them. Is it normal that if you have a NCB on one policy with one company you cannot use that NCB with another company? Last edited by Seeker; 10-08-19 at 12:39 PM. |

Re: Multi bike insurance
You can normally only use one NCB for one policy, however a lot of insurance companies will give you some credit on the basis of another policy, for example if you have full NCB on a policy they might give you one years NCB on a new policy, which is usually the biggest fraction of the total NCB. It's up to them. That is one advantage of a multibike policy, they all get the same NCB regardless of when you add one.

ok, thanks. Not ever having had two bikes I just assumed (incorrectly) the NCB would apply to all policies. What is odd too is they quoted me a figure for coverage then asked about my NCB. I told them 4 years but it didn't drop the quoted price and now they're threatening to cancel the policy (which hasn't started anyway) because of the inconclusive NCB proof. They sure get threatening quickly. |

Re: Multi bike insurance
I've often wondered about m/c ncb, when checking out insurance costs on various bikes and scooters using comparison sites I've looked at the difference between cost with and without ncb applied.
Surprisingly it sometimes makes no difference at all. |
