Question Memory Cards for GoPro

So i won a nice little bet the other week so i've treated myself to a GoPro camera... anyway, i'm looking at memory cards and it says it needs a class 10 card which i think is to do with the write speed.

been on amazon looking at a san disc one and a lot of people saying that the write speed with it was way down or they didn't work. also been looking at samsung with get a much better write up but write speed is still way below what people thought

e.g the samsung was quoted at a speed of 48 mb but most people seem to get 10-15

the san disc was about 5

what actually affects the write speed? and has anyone got experience with either and can recommend one or another?
here are the links

and san disc

Default Memory Cards for GoPro

I have a 32gb class 10 Samsung for my drift and it is fine. If you want a link to the exact one I bought (from amazon) drop me a pm and I will let you know when I am home. *Edit* Looks like it was the same as your first link *

Which Go-Pro did you buy? This affects what the camera is capable of transferring, so your card has to match at least that. The other things to consider are your settings on the camera that will affect the amount of data generated, such as image size (eg 1024x76, quality of the HD recording, the frame rate etc.

I have an original Go-Pro HD hero with a scandisk 8GB Class 10 (20Mb/s) and that is fine at 1080p, 1920x1080 default frame rate. YMMV with your unit.

EDIT: Corrected image size used.

Lots of things affect write speed. If it's a genuine SanDisk / Samsung class 10 then I'd be pretty confident it's not the card that'll bottleneck.

Some people use very cheap card readers with poor controllers in them that bottleneck before the card does and then complain online about it.

HD Video, depending on compression used isn't actually a huge data-rate. 1080p @25fps once the camera has done the MPEG2 encoding might only be 2-3Mbps. Compare this to an SLR taking 23MB frames at 8fps and you can see that comparatively HD Video needen't be that bad. Find out what data rate / compression is used by the GoPro with your settings.

Its a Hero 3 black but chances are i will only be recording 1080p 60fps for the most part for the odd slow mo might play with some of the others

ok well sounds like i'm safe with either... will probably go with the samsung i think hopefully have some good stuff to post up fairly soon!

OK, I've done a bit of googling, and it looks like the video output from the GoPro is higher than the estimates I've seen from other devices in the past:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1770212

That would suggest a sustained 30Mbps could be being used. The SanDisk Ultra range should be OK with that (It's what I'm using in my Drift 170), but the Extreme level above would definitely do it.

Ahh thanks jambo, the SanDisc extreme only appears to be available as a micro sd up to 16gb which i worry would fill up pretty quick at 1080p... (the link appears to be a standard sd card size)

if you say the SanDisc ultra should do the job then i'm tempted to stick with that for the moment and see how it goes while i get used to all the settings (maybe the samsung since it has a faster quoted write speed, although from reviews this seems to be pretty inaccurate)

This is the one you can buy on GoPro's own site.....but much cheaper.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-micr.../dp/B007JTKLEK

Its what I use in my Contour with no issues.

Default Memory Cards for GoPro

Sandisk extreme, but they only have Extreme Pro in microSD atm.

I sell memory cards for cameras for a living (amongst other things) and I can guarantee its the best build quality and great value for money.

Sandisk have a contract with GoPro, and are also the worlds leading memory company... And there's a reason for that

Sent from that magical device in my pocket.
