Spark plug change, now misfiring.
I have an SV650S 99-00, last night i decided to change the spark plugs, which the front plug proved to be quite difficult, however i did it after about an hours work... anyway before this i dip the bike on to its side whilst i turned it around as my garage space is iimited.... when i tried to start the bike up after the hour it was cutting out and spluttering and the exhaust air was reeaallly powerful.... also in the spy glass half of it is black which i know is not supposed to be like this..... I left it till this morning but same thing so couldnt ride it to work. can somebody help with any suggestions! i can only think that i have flooded the engine and need to drain the oil out!!

Re: Help (Problem)
if you drained it, then the fuel in the carbs would have spilled out on the floor out of the overflow pipes by the site of the engine, is it only running on one cylinder? perhaps you havent done the front one correctly and its sparking at the rear block but as its been on its side then it would take a while for it to start properly.
I would put on full choke, dont statr the engine give it a couple of twists of the throttle, to fill the carbs with a bit of fuel, the put on half choke and start the engine, that should get it to life. |

Pull the plugs out again and check their gaps, you did check them before fitting didn't you?

Re: Spark plug change, now misfiring.
You need a feeler gauge, set the gap betwen 0.7-0.8mm or 28-31 thou.
You will find a workshop manual you can download free on http://www.sv650.org/ look under 'FAQs and how to's', then 'can I buy a manual', then 'or you can download from this site here' All you will ever need |

Re: Spark plug change, now misfiring.
New plugs normally come gapped nowadays, although still worth checking.
Before you do that try the caps are fitted properly and the rubber seal isnt preventing a good contact. The front one is quite difficult if your a bit kack handed with them |

Re: Spark plug change, now misfiring.
It's probably not it, but maybe check if your vacuum is connected.
I've just changed mine and once I started the bike I thought it's running on 1 cylinder and I got some pops out of the exhaust (no, not the good ones). I've noticed that the vacuum has come off, so reconnected it, went for a very short ride, bike feels fine. |
