New to SV's

Hi guys I have been riding for years (I run the fireblade owners club).

Last year I sold my cbr1000rr and bought a car to play with for abit, however I'm bored of it now, and am subseqeuntly buying a bike. I have decided on a SV650, as I have grown up and realised you don't really need a 1000cc sports bike on the road.

What I am after is a list of usual things that go wrong with them.

I know all the usual checks for bikes, as I have been riding bikes for 15 years plus!!!!

I just wondered if there is a definitive list of SV issues.

Also if anybody has one for sale, and is interested in trading with a 1991 205 GTI let me know.

Generally v. reliable bikes. Main bike-specific problem is water in the front cyclinder is a possibility if riding in rain, easily/cheaply remidied by a fender extender (£20) or thick grease around the front spark plug and plugging the drainage holes with it (as water can get in them).

Which year bike are you looking at getting?

Not so fussed at year yet, I'm going to see what's about.

Camchain tensioners can go dodgy. They give you lots of warning before engine damage and is quite rare.
the 99 and 00 can have oil starvation issues.
Choke plungers can sieze up on the carbed bike, easily remedied by maintenence.
Fuel tank drain tube can rust through, again a rare problem.

The front forks are $hit.

The nuts are made of cheese and rust, even if covered liberally in ACF-50, best to invest in stainless steel replacements.

and a sv after a blade is like going from a lambo to a lada

Main thing i've learnt with an SV is if the maintenance is kept up it's a strong bike. People on here cover high mileage. Baph i think covered 35k and his rec/reg went which is a common fault but i think it's been reliable for him. One american poster got 105k out of an engine without much faults IIRC.

Also spares are pretty cheap, Baph's rec was £25, forks springs and thicker oil cost me £100, chain and sprockets are £100, tyres are about £200 ride in, ride out for both and a basic service is very cheap.

Only thing really difficult with an SV is the valve clearances really.

Nah, thats a doddle if you know what to do with a feeler guage.

Not so fussed about the Lada/Lambo quote, the bike is only as fast as the road!!!
