Advanced Motoring
I'm interested in learning as much as I can about bikes and riding etc and would like to do the advanced motoring course thingymajig. Would anyone happen to know where the nearest centre is to me and if you know any details I would appreciate the info eg. costs/length etc.

I'm doing it at the moment. The 'skills for life' course costs £85 (which includes everything, even the test fee!) and lasts about 12 weeks, but if you are not ready for test by then, you can keep on going until you are. You can find a list of the IAM groups in the northwest here http://www.iam.org.uk/IAMGroups/region5.php I'm doing mine with the South Lancs group and they appear pretty good.
Apart from the severe nerves when I think about the exam, I'm really enjoying it |

Shortly after the Boer War, I undertook some advanced training - I seem to think it was via ACU, and it was their Bronze/Silver/Gold Star scheme. Most of the trainers were Old Bill (actually, my trainer was Young Bill) and it was based on the "Roadcraft" manual.
I got up to Silver level and I remember most of the stuff to this day - when I make a (frequent) mistake now, I have a flash of guilty recall! It improved my bike riding then, AND my car driving. And it was fun! I'm sure you will enjoy the IAM course - I've thought of doing it myself too. |

I ride a lot now with a chap who's a RoSPA gold and spends a lot of time riding with police riders. Ive ridden with some police riders now.
My overtaking on bends and riding on the wrong side of the road is much improved |

In my view anything that makes you a better, more aware rider has got to be good. |
