Default Armed Forces Day Battle of Britain Flight

No Lancaster unfortunately, but the Spitfire and Hurricane put on a superb display! At the start of their third pass, you could really hear the Merlin engines winding up! Goosebumps down the spine time.

Pity about the sound of people talking over it.

A good few years ago I was shooting at Roby Mill and on top of the hill on lookout duty when a Lanc with a Spitfire and Hurricane escorts just cleared it by about 50ft. the noise was tremendous. But as I used to run an engine test cell that had been originally built to test Merlins and we would run one up every so often, the noise when it is on the dyno under load and you are stood next to it is even better.

I used to know a scrap dealer who had 6 brand new in shipping crates Merlins. He knew what he had bought all those years ago and they were his retirement fund.

Is the Lancaster still stranded in France with hydraulic gremlins? Was meant to do a flypast for the RAF Freedom Parade in Wycombe a few weeks ago and we were all a bit disappointed that it was not able to make it. The very same Hurricane from Pete's excellent snaps filled in which was nice but not quite the goose-pimple-up-the-spine sound of four synchronised Merlins. Looks like you had better weather than I did too Pete.

I've rather a lot of Lancaster, Dakota, Merlin and Sally B-Flying Fortress photos from American Airday on May Bank Holiday
Shame I couldn't attend the event on 2nd September in East Kirkby where there will be three Lancasters in the same place at the same time!
