Default Disabling 'parking' light switch

Hey,

I left my light on the 'parking' setting all weekend, and it's killed my battery. At £50 for a new one I don't want to do that again.

Is it easy to cut a wire and disable that setting on the ignition? Yeah, I know it would be easier to just remember, but I'm not that clever.

Cheers

Could you not charge your battery?

Many of the new chargers will not charge batteries unless they can detect a small voltage and polarity. Optimate are designed to charge up batteries that have been deep discharged, or at least try to.

What bike have you got?

I'm paranoid about this, after leaving the lights on my old (1971) Beetle for 1/2 hour which drained the battery flat & it was being MOT'd the next day, grrrr! Charged it up & it started fine.

Even though this was about 10yrs ago, I'm still paranoid about leaving vehicle lights on. For the bike, I always have to switch it to parking, then switch it back one notch noting the lights going off....

Pointy or curvy?

I don't have a diagram for a pointy, but on the curvy it is the brown wire from the ignition switch that drives the side lights. In the 'P' position, the ignition switch shorts the red wire (live feed) to the brown wire. In the ‘ON’ position it connects the Brown and Grey wire (Grey is then the +ve feed (from the lighting circuit)). It is these two (Brown and Grey) you want to snip and join before they enter the ignition switch to eliminate the ‘P’ circuit.

If it is a pointy, I will need a pointy diagram, but wouldn’t be surprised if the colours are the same.

The cleanest way to do this mod is to remove the two wires from the connector just before the ignition switch, then join/touch these and tape them to check the circuit. After that then you can join properly with solder/crimps/bullets or whatever.

No more flat batteries!! Enjoy!!
