Engine and header painting?
Hi folks,
I'm looking to tidy up the exhaust headers on my SV650 and maybe touch up the engine too Anyone painted their headers with success? I've heard PJ1 paint is good... anyone had experience? Or used anything else? (And I know I could take the headers off and have them coated, but it's more work and cost AND my rusty, furry header bolts look like they're going nowhere fast... don't want to have to end up drilling out sheared header bolts!) |

Re: Engine and header painting?
They are stainless and can be polished back no matter how bad they have got.
Fine sandpaper, dremel with wire brush, rubber polishing block, autosol and lots of elbow grease, they will look like new. |

Re: Engine and header painting?
Those rusty and furry header bolts are coming off the front pot when you want to service your swing arm and rear suspension bushes. Best sort them out now as later! If you do just want to tart the header up Harpic max strength is a good place to start with removing a lot of the discolouration. (other acidic bog cleaners are available).

Re: Engine and header painting?
Well if that’s the case i’ll let the garage do it
Are they normal ‘major service’ items? |

Harpic max strength seem to get the job done with least elbow grease and without scratching pipes.

Re: Engine and header painting?
The header bolts are no better or worse than any exhaust bolt. It is the combination of high temps and being sprayed with water/salt over and over again that gets them. Use stainless replacements but you MUST use anti seize compound if you use stainless nuts on stainless bolts or they will cold weld.
