Default Dog, vet, very large bill!

Worrying time this week.

My dog Mabel was pretty poorly last weekend, so much so that I took her to our vet out of hours. Initially thought it was some sort of infection and treated her accordingly.

Much worse on Monday morning so back to the vet where after blood tests and an examination it was a suspected case of a canine form of meningitis.

After checking our pet insurance we were referred to Willows vet centre and referral in Solihull, big state of the art place with all the necessary CT scanning, X-ray and various other hi-tec bits and bobs. We had a day there while they ran a whole series of tests, scans and checks. The meningitis diagnosis was confirmed and painkillers and a 10 month course of steroids was prescribed.

The canine form of this illness is not infectious or contagious, it's a temporary glitch with the body's immune system which causes it to attack the body and results in inflammation, in this case, of the musculature surrounding the spinal column in the neck. Steroids are the recognised (and very effective) treatment.

Thank goodness for pet insurance though. The day's Solihull adventure totted up to £2600!! I paid just a £75 excess.

She's on the mend now thankfully and starting to behave like her usual self again. Needs to put some weight back on again though as she lost nearly 2 kilos during the week.

Thanks fellers, she is looking so much better. No problem with our 5 mile walk this afternoon and her tail has regained it's customary curl!

Yay, glad all is well. Could've been expensive but shows that when it is needed pet insurance can save a bundle.

Glad Mabel is on the mend

My cat was referred to that place when she had a stroke. Bill was nearly £3k

She had to stay overnight, it was about £90 just for the overnight stay, more expensive than a hotel............for people!!

Glad I was insured also.

Our vets have their own scheme, After a bad experience with >than refusing to pay classing a problem as pre-existing (we took out a new policy with them rather than renew the existing) we moved to the vets own scheme. Thank goodness. 8 years of making "unnecessary" payments when Jasper became ill.

We have certainly got our moneys worth back. Monthly checks, 4 different repeat meds. his problems :- Heart murmur, Albumin deficiency, thickening of intestines/bowel. Fluid building up on lungs.

Poor sod has lost 50% of his body weight. Vet says not to let him go out on any thing more than a short walk and some days he doesn't want to leave his bed. Took him out the other day and he spots his prize.

Whilst the pup wants to play with the cute little cavalier king charles spaniel. Jasper has other ideas. He may be a crock, but there is still life in the old dog yet.

The pup went on the vets scheme, the day we got him.

If we ever got a dog, pet insurance would be the first thing we got. My mum had a Jack Russell that got ill and it ended up costing her a fortune after it was attacked by another dog.

As mum found out with her Tesco policy.
Cesarean section lost 5 puppies then on going care... Ouch
