Default Odometer freaking out

Ok so I was riding home today when all of a sudden my odometer started to randomly flash different mph from 0-60 it was so fast I could barely read the numbers then it stopped and stayed at 0 and the trip meter stopped working as well. Any ideas as to what is wrong and how can I fix it?

My Varadero did this when the Rectifier was on the blink , that might be a start , what is the voltage like on the battery ?

It's the speedo rotor at the front wheel - about 15 quid to replace.

Take the front wheel off and bits of brown magnetic plastic will fall out. Be careful when you put the new one in that you don't break it.

Prime suspect, yes, but not always. As Badger says, I've seen it on numerous engines when the reg/rec is about to go. Watch for the rev counter being erratic too, as this will rule out the speedo rotor.

Ride a pointy without a reg/rec, on a fully charged battery, and you'll get about 8 miles. I know from experience.

When mine did it it turned out to be the speedo sensor/cable itself. The rotor was also mashed.

You can get loads further on curvy one without all the silly EFI...

Granted, but it's the easiest thing to check, and the cheapest to fix.

See, I disagree on one aspect of that. Seat up, tank up, DMM out, reg/rec checked. Much easier than taking a wheel off!

You have me on the cheaper aspect though.
