... and that is exactly what a normal healthy, SV sounds like. As said elsewhere, SVs are mechanically noisy compared with inline 4 or inline twins, because the SV has not one, but two hugely long camchains which tick away to themselves, and the sound is not being damped by a large mass of cylinder block like it is with a 4 or twin.

Wrong way round, its should read "because the USA & Canada use a different method"

The problem with old machinery not designed for ethanol...
Ethanol is a solvent and will simply dissolve some of the components in older machinery.

Doesn't the FI engine have a knock sensor to automatically set the timing according to the fuel that's in the tank?

Ethanol will actually raise the octane and thereby the resistance to knocking - it is the other nasty habits ethanol has of attracting water and dissolving some metals and plastics in vehicles not designed to handle fuel with it in.
