Edit; I use diesel to clean the stainless steel scorpion can on mine after getting the majority of crap off with good ol water and a brush...pulls the tar and other burnt on crap right off. Just use a cloth dipped in it so as to keep it away from the rubber.

Parafin soaked rag takes of the lube on my rear wheel, then carefully treated with WD40 helps come of easier next time.
