Watching every race live on You Tube

Go ETNZ !!!

Sailing Anarchy have a sub-forum especially for the AC - quite a 'lively' place at the moment !!

Watched some of it last weekend. Was truly mind blowing to see the boats doing 38kts in 10kts of wind while balanced on the smallest of hydrofoils.

It's not sailing, it's flying.

Watching the upwind leg of Race 10 last night seeing 2 x 72' foiling catamarans heading for a cross at a closing speed of 60+ kts was simply breathtaking !!!

However, as exciting as these boats are to watch, I doubt we'll see them after this AC - unless of course OTUSA upset everything and actually win the regatta !!

Why do you say that? Do you think ETNZ will choose a different type of boat? They seem to have got the design of their boat spot on.

I grew up racing Hobie cats and have a small trimaran now, but these things taking sailing to a whole new level. The consequences of even just a small mistake or mechanical hitch (as we saw on Saturday) can be huge. Watching them being pushed is like watching Marc Marquez coming round Woodcote, you just know that eventually it's all going to go pear shaped!

Grant Dalton (MD - ETNZ) has already stated that he believes that although these boats are "cool" they are also "uneconomic & unsustainable" and that if ETNZ wins then they would like a minimum of 10 teams competing next time & will work at making this commercially viable by "getting costs down".

When you consider that Larry Ellison (Owner - Oracle Team USA) is thought to have spent approx $200m on this defence campaign alone (some say almost $1b in total over the last 12 years) & the estimated cost of one of these boats is in the region of $10m (ETNZ & Oracle both have 2 each) and that's before you even think about the number of shore crew required to run a campaign or the guys who are actually going to sail the thing - (sailing 'rockstars' don't come cheap !!) you can see where he's coming from !

Ive watched most of it and its cool stuff, but like formula one,it is clearly just too expensive.
They have done traditional boats, now flying boats,so how about sailing submarines next time?
