Coolant leak?

Got stuck in London traffic after yesterday's horrendous terror attack. Shocking day all round, but great response by the emergency services and great to see such a thorough a rapid response.

As part of my extended slow ride, I noticed a few things that i hadn't had the chance before on shorter, less congested rides.

Temperature: I would say the average temp on my 2012 sv650s was just under 100 degrees C. The coolant was defo working as I would notice the temp go down from about 100 to 93 in standing traffic. I also read somewhere that the fan only kicks in around 100-110. What you guys say is the normal standing temp? I'm going to check the coolant level this weekend as may be a bit low. Annoyingly means taking off the fairings.

Coolant leak: after I parked the bike up unnoticed a puddle forming under the bike, is this normal after a long ride and could it just be steam. Or again would It suggest an issue with the cooling system. Photo attached.



Anyway, any help would be much appreciated.

Those temps seem absolutely fine. Not sure about the puddle I wouldn't expect any steam/condensation build up straight after a ride.
Are you sure it wasn't some rainwater hidden away in your fairings that's dribbled out when you've put it on the stand?

Hi tom_e, thanks for the feedback. Defo not rainwater. First ride of the week yesterday, so haven't been out in rain for a while. Besides would've been resting in same position since. Have read that it could be too high a coolant level so overflow resulting from high temps.

It's possible it may be due to too high a coolant level I suppose, if you've got the OEM fairings though you should be able to check the level in the bottle under the tank without removing them. It's just behind the idle adjustment screw.

It may have just been the standing traffic but it seems high to me especially for this time of year.

The thermostats on my other liquid cooled engines open around 82 Deg C and the fans kick in before 90 Deg C and cool the engines to their running temps.

Thanks guys. Seems to be a deeper issue. I had a proper look tonight, the leak is defo coolant dripping out of the radiotor. Going to take it apart next week as I think the radiator is damaged. To add insult to injury the horn/beeper screw has come off so it's dangling behind the radiator. May even be what caused the damage.

That's a pain! Get a rad guard on there once you get it sorted should keep it in one piece

Will do for sure.

My sv650s is 2012 model. Is that the K9? Looking at Wikipedia model year 2008-2014 is K8 and K9. All the rads online go by K number?....

It's an l2 but some k series parts fit such as rad + oil guards

Any rad guard from K7 will definitely fit as they're all the same engines, in fact from K3 onwards will probably be a pretty safe bet as I don't think the rads changed when the engines changed to twin spark.
