Default What!!!

Tweet from Feargal Sharkey. Apparently the megamuppet Therese Coffey has solved the mystery of river pollution. It's wild birds. Just stop the world please, I want to get off now.

And don't forget all those fish pooing in the water!

It beggars belief. Yet there's a section of the population that swallow it unthinkingly (in more ways than one).

Well if that doesn't sink the Conservatives on election day nothing will.

Suppose it could be a good reason to build more wind farms to decrease the bird population further, but not in the Cotswolds of course.
How can anyone be so stupid to make such claims?
As regards agriculture, who has the power to ensure that laws are in place to limit the pollution getting into the rivers? Oh the enforcement agency has been cut to the bone which does not help.

On the swallow theme Craig she sounds a right t-t and I don't mean Blue

privatisation at its best. NO utility company should be privatised. how can something be cost effective when profits have to be made.

i'm so glad Scotland's water is nationalised (for now).

Absolutely Bibs. All the utilities should be in public hands, not paying obscene amounts to shareholders.

And not sorting out the basic infrastructure, pumping sewage into waterways should be illegal and a prerequisite of obtaining their license.

You may have gathered this is a topic that really ****-s me off.

Agreed that national infrastructure should be owned by the nation, not private companies and certainly not foreign private companies. Welsh Water are meant to be not for profit and owned by Welsh Government. Their record on infrastructure maintenance and sewage discharge is woeful - a lack of regulation is causing this. The not for profit part is a joke too, there is always a surplus and its not clear what happens to it. Clearly it does not go into pipe renewal! Welsh Water shows that this model does not work either.

Direct control is needed of all utility / national infrastructure so nationalisation seems the right way, but will need strong management to keep to 'service driven' aims. Lucrative contracts and the back hander gravy train will need to be weeded out.

I suspect this subject would generate an entire thread.
