Warming Up

Hi,

Having previously owned a great 1994 Honda Africa twin which i loved so much, i had to replace it. So i went looking around and found the 2001 model colour brand new SV650. Loved it from the start and haven't regretted it. Anyway my question is, i have the bike in a garage and I've been told to wait for the bike to warm up and when it reaches about 1200 RPM then to go. So if i go when its 1600 or 1700RPM, will it do any harm? Summer or winter? With the Africa, i started the engine and i was off

Hallo and welcome to the forum.

I normally give my old curvy a few minutes to warm up before pulling away on it, just to give the oil a chance to get round and put a little bit of heat into it. Nothing terribly precise about it really. Must be doing something right as the bike now has 105,000 miles on it and the engine has never needed anything doing to it.

My VFR can be temperamental when cold. So I start the bike while I fiddle with gloves, helmet etc. I drive off once the idle speed drops to normal.

i think that the warm up thing stems back to when people used single grade oils and its just stuck. with modern multigrade oils they are always in grade for outside temp.

personally i just start the bike, put my helmet and gloves on and go but dont give it the beans till temp is fully up say around 1-2miles.

On both carb'd and fuel-injected bikes, I've always given them 10 or 15 seconds from cold to build oil pressure, then ridden off (closing the choke as quickly as possible on carb'd bikes).

My first mile or so when setting off on a ride is all 30 limits in our town anyway, so that gives time for everything to warm up a bit ready to work.
