Default Oil leak, now engine noise. Pointy.

My bike was leaking oil yesterday, I pulled over as soon as I noticed but at that stage the oil light had come on and it had lost quite a lot and needed a new filter. I got it recovered to my mechanic in east London, he has changed the filter and put new oil in but the bike is not sounding great . It is a 2012 model.

My mechanic usually deals with Honda’s so he is not sure where to go from here. Does anyone have any ideas or know of a mechanic who is familiar with SV’s? Helpppp

I know one but he is in South Norfolk. Services my bike and owned a TL1000 until last month. Not a lot of help to you I'm afraid, if you live in London.

Spannerman on here is based in London, but even though your mechanic deals with Honda's he should have enough mechanical knowledge to diagnose the problem with your Sv?

But if its been starved of oil it could be terminal for the big ends.

Another for spannerman. Wouldn't let anyone else put a spanner to my bikes.
He's based at Sunbury cross, Google stewarts motorcycles and give him a ring. And mention your off the forum.

Thanks guys, Sunbury is a bit far from me. I have managed to find a local mechanic.
I went to see my bike last night, it is knocking ( It is going to need an engine rebuild. All because a stone hit the filter and all the oil leaked out, god only knows how much it will cost

That's bloody unlucky, must have been an ultra sharp stone to do that.

Might be quicker and cheaper to replace the engine, rather than rebuild it?

Some on Ebay, although none of your year.

or try a search on here

Yes it was very unlucky, It had an oil change in October but i reckon they didnt change the filter and it was rotten and weak. I only have the bike month.

I have had a look for an engine but they are rare. My engine only has 10,000 miles so i will probably stick with it

Ill contact the breaker though, thanks.

Here we go again.

Assuming the diagnosis is correct and the big end is knocking, the engine is almost certainly beyond economic repair. Suzuki do not sell over-sized shells, so you need to buy a new crank along with the con rods and shells as a set. This costs between £800 - £900 depending on year, plus the gasket kit and a few items you'd need are going to be an extra £200 or so.
Against this background a replacement engine usually makes the most sense.

Perhaps your motor is salvageable, but do not start paying the labour to strip it down without getting a good idea of the parts spend involved.

Very sorry to hear your news, that sounds really very unlucky. Had the oil loss been faster, damage probably wouldn't have occurred before the light came on, slower and you'd have noticed it marking its territory when you parked it up.
