Well having had a bike on a ferry several times. I have seen these so called experts make a right mess with some peoples bikes. I still say if you want to make sure of no damage, then strap it down yourself.

Our boats (Aberdeen to Lerwick) do a good job with straps, and huge lumps of foam, but they're happy to let you strap the bike if you want to. I don't bother.
