it'll just be a mix of cold air circulating and being a bit clammy as waterproofs wil never breath quite as much as you need em too

Yes I've never ever been happy with Gortex or believed their waterproof claims. That's why I have Alpine Stars two piece waterproofs, which are genuinely waterproof, take seconds to put on and fold up very small (and they're always in my Knox backpack). They also completely dry off, once indoors, within 30 mins. Oh and they're lined too, and provide extra warmth as they're windproof.

If you're feeling wet and clammy when it is raining, then it is not generally a problem with the gortex, it is however a problem with the type of clothing or undergarments you're wearing. Gortex does not work as well with cotton base layers. This is because cotton does not transfer sweat away from the skin aswell as a polyester based garment such as Craft or EDZ.
Gortex works on a temperature gradient where water vapour is transfered from warm to cold... think of water droplets being the size of an elephant, and the gortex holes the size of a mouse hole, the water vapour is the size of a mouse. Never put gortex over a direct heat as this shrinks the linings and therefore removes the waterproofness and breathability. Also by putting it over a heat the vapour will reverse transfer through the garment and therefore will be wet on the inside. Gortex claim that they are 100% waterproof and breathable. Therefore if you are unsatisfied take the item back and it will be sent off for testing at their facilities in scotland. It comes with a lifetime garentee so use it. To recap... 1. try different base layers 2. wash and reproof the garments using nikwax tech wash and the tx direct spray 3. don't leave your clothes over a heat. I use gortex and have done for over 5 years (on the bike and with my Geology), i have never had any problems. Sammy |
