Help!!! Tyre valve has gone awry...
I have an old Yamaha, and yesterday I bashed the wheel/tyre valve with my big heavy chain.
It’s split the valve unit at the bottom, where it meets the wheel, and now it lets air out when I nudge it (like one of those chimps you see in documentaries). The rubber/plastic must be so old it's no longer malleable. What can I use to plug the gap? I think that superglue might melt more of the rubbery plastic away. What about some of that tyre weld stuff? Is it expensive to replace the valve unit? It’s on the front wheel. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'm so annoyed because I got it started with a new battery after it had been lying idle for many months, and took it for a ride yesterday, so for this to happen is just rubbish... |

Take it to a tyre place. They'll just pop off the tyre and fit a new valve, which they should do as a matter of course when fitting a new tyre. Probably cost more for the labour in getting the tyre off and back on, than it will for a new valve

Indeed, I wouldn't want to be riding it should the "fix" give way at any speed, especially a front wheel
Take it easy getting there , or I'd probably take the wheel of myself and take that in, cheaper to. Cheers Mark.

Re: Help!!! Tyre valve has gone awry...
Last time I have a valve split it cost me 10 quid to get it done, but the wheel was not on the bike. It was just the time it took to take the tyre of, change the valve and put it back on.

Also if it fails while you're on the way you end up with a bike that doesn't work, stranded no-where near decent tools and transport links

I get stressed checking oil my friend, the most complex mechanical task I have ever accomplished was fitting a high efficiency light bulb, and that was only because I am super tall. I hate old bikes. They always do something to p*ss you off. |
