A bike left standing can suffer problems with clutch plate material going bad, maybe the steel plates have suffered corrosion? Its not a difficult job to replace the plates and springs, you can get an EBC set with slightly stronger springs, but thre is no real need.

You might like to try replacing the oil before delving into the clutch itself
Thank you for your reply.

I have taken off the worm gear and cleaned it and re-greased the whole assembly. The muck that came out was most undignified, hence not explaining what it looked like.

There was a lump of grit in the casing and it may have been preventing the clutch from releasing when pulled, also the push rod was filthy and corroded. This has been cleaned and greased.

Will put it all back together tomorrow morning and see how it runs then.

As for the oil, it was changed along with filters and plugs less than 200miles ago. Still looks golden brown in the case window too.

If it turns out that the clutch is bad I've still got a complete clutch (basket and all) from my old engine. You could have the complete set of plates out of that for a fair whack cheaper than a new set, if you needed.

Well, here is a quick review of today's SV related mayhem.

I refitted the worm gear and push rod this lunchtime and I swear it felt like a different clutch lever, so smooth and so light, it felt like the clutch on the 125, only lighter!

I ask Carol to take it for a test ride, this is not as charitable as it sounds, if it breaks, I can always find another wife! She managed to get the back wheel to spin on the road, which I have never seen her do before. Then after a quick cuppa, we hit the M5 and head Welshwards...

The clutch is back to perfect, full power to the back wheel and boy can it accelerate, it will be a shame to put the 33BHP ECU back in next week.

Lesson learned here today, always clean and grease your worm gear and push rod or face a broken bike!

A big thank you to Neeja for his offer of replacement parts if needed, but I think that we will be OK now. Sylvie is booked in on Friday morning for her MOT and then on Saturday, I am on the front seat.

Right off for a bath now, Carol wanted to give the bike a shake down run today and my neck and shoulders ache from holding on hard. We also discovered that the bike can hold my movie camera on the mirror stalk, so we have footage of her whizzing about in Wales, even if that does sound a little Enid Blighton!

hey guys, just replaced my plates, but havn't put the case back on, my question is.....
would you re-use the gasgit? and did you use any sealant for the seperate parts of the gasgit where the water circulates ( i think) as you can see in the pic below

Reusing a gasket can be ok, but you would want to keep an eye on it for oil leaks. As this one has water passages in it as well I'd be a bit cautious, its only a tenner for a new one.
