Considering putting stock muffler back on :-s
Hi everyone, first post rather than only reading up for info....
I have a K5 SV650 naked in black, all black including a black carbon oval exhaust which came with the bike. The seller claimed that the baffle "fell out" when riding and he never decided to sort it. This effectively makes the can illegal, despite passing MOT with an advisory. So the story goes, I've been riding this bike round for a whole year and I absolutely love it! I love the look of the bike, it handles great and its quick enough for me. The exhaust is pretty loud, so loud that I have been wearing ear plugs on my daily 8 mile city commute as the noise is not really bearable. At first the sound was great, but now the noise is kinda wearing me out. I acquired a stock exhaust for the grand total of £15 inc postage but never fitted it and don't really have the resources to spend over £100/£150 on a new road legal can. So I am considering putting the stock can back on...... I want to ask the following: Will my fuel efficiency improve with stock exhaust? Will the bike sound like crap? Will the added weight be noticable? How difficult is it to re-install the stock exhaust when the pipe has been previously cut? Is it possible to buy an affordable good looking stubby exhaust that is road legal? Should I just leave the current pipe as is and keep purchasing ear plugs and sounding like a yobbo? Somebody please help me make a descision! https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...type=3&theater This is a picture of what the bike pretty much looks like now. |

So to answer your questions, firstly I doubt very much that you will notice any difference in fuel efficiency (and from a personal viewpoint I consider that lower fuel efficiency is directly proportional to the amount of fun you are having).
Yes it will sound like a sewing machine with the stock can on. The weight won't be noticeable and even if you did you'd get used to it pretty quickly. Reinstalling the original is straight forward, you just need an adaptor providing the cut was well placed originally, or if its a full replacement of the original just hope you can remove the exhaust studs. Road legal is a grey area. Don't sound like a yobbo it gives us all a bad name. My advise, fit a universal baffle if you can't locate the cans manufacturer and order one from them. |

You can get removable baffles/ decibel killers which fit in the tail pipe. Id try that.

+1 to all the above. If I remember right, Fuel Exhausts sell a reconnection sleeve for remounting the standard exhaust for about a tenner.
And several of the aftermarket exhaust makers (Black Widow, etc) sell removable dB killers for about a tenner, like Biggles said. If you want to keep the stubby look then as a rule of thumb, stubby cans are louder and raspier than a conventional-size can. However, I've heard a couple of SV650s now with the GRmoto small cans on (and the dBkiller fitted) and they sound quite mellow and only a tiny bit louder than stock at idle and lower rpm. GRmoto also does an offer on this forum (I'm not affiliated to them in any way, etc etc) |

Re: Considering putting stock muffler back on :-s
Been having a think about comments and advice here.
Will probably stick with the current exhaust and try a dB killer. Not sure on the brand of mine but Gr Moto might be worth a punt for £15 to see if it fits. They look similar, will have a measure up today. Mine is a tri-oval. Continued use of ear plugs too. Do you guys tell your insurers about aftermarket exhausts? If it gets ruined in an accident I wouldn't be bothered...... Sent from my VOG-L09 using Tapatalk Last edited by Tommiller0211; 03-10-19 at 10:29 AM. |

But yes, you'd best tell them. Or you may find them trying to say your insurance is invalid.
Then depending on what you just hit/hit you, you could be buggered. |
