Default Gear whine in 5th

Afternoon people,

Just noticed that my K8 SV has a distinctive whining noise in 5th gear when the throttle is open which is starting to concern me.

Has anyone else encountered an issue like this? The other gears are practically silent but as soon as you click it in to 5th it's there, though only when you open the throttle, if you close the throttle the whining noise goes away.

Cheers.

What's the condition of the chain and sprockets?

Had exactly the same on my old mans Bandit - though his was maybe 4th gear IIRC. Went away when I changed the totally gubbed C&S.

Chain & sprocket appear to be in good condition with plenty of life.

It's not a major problem but I was wondering whether it was a sign of an issue or just one of those "some do, some don't" things.

Mine also has a distinctive whine/transmission whine in top gear so I will be interested to see what others say.

I also have brand new chain and sprocket so it isn`t them and to be honest it doesn`t bother me too much but like you it is a back of the mind worry.

I'll have a chum who works at the local bike shop take a look at it and see what he says.

The bike is still under warranty so may have to go down that route if it is deemed a problem.

it can also be too tight a chain and the output shaft is whining. always better to have a slightly loose chain that a slightly tight one.

But wouldn't that make the noise present in any gear rather than just one?

The chain appears to have the correct amount of free play.

might do but from experience with noises from bikes you might not hear it.

if the whine is only at a certain speed/revs then i would say that is what they all do its just that some people hear it and some dont. most folks with a noisy can wont hear it over the induction noise. you will only hear it at a steady throttle and cursing otherwise you will not hear it on acceleration which it will then go away.

by all means go and get it checked out.
