Default Re: Help! SV650 06 won't fire up

I've just tried it again, I turn it over, it kicked out massive bang and a flame about a foot long out of the can (presumably the unburnt fuel from previous tries)

I ran down the road with it, tried to bump it and it tried so very hard, let out one or two backfires whilst growling a bit before stopping completely..

I'm hoping the above will mean a lot more to the right person than it does me. But I'm still lost and getting growingly frustrated with it!

I've done some research and think I've narrowed it down to the fuel strainer in the pump.. Will take it out and clean it tomorrow

Hope that does it. I'm thinking on the same lines as RH in that the ignition timing is out, probably due to a poor connection or sensor.

Under the seat. You could use WD40 but better to buy a proper contact cleaner as it won't leave an oily residue that attracts dirt.

what had you done prior to it not running?

if nothing then new spark plugs should be your first port of call.

It's just come back from the garage now working fine.. New plugs, oil change, throttle bodies balanced, and new air filter. They think it was a bad mix of all of the above...

Thank you all for the input and advice. Knew I could trust the org! Just lost all patience and dropped it off there!

As a rough guide, when should plugs be replaced? Mine are now 3 years and 18,000 miles old.

Do you know the history of your plugs Lew?

That can't be right?! Were they duffers or was it due to the other factors that wrecked them? Don't worry if you can't answer that, but it would be useful to know when we should think about replacing them. Seem to remember them lasting for years in my old ST220 even with, em, spirited driving.
