Default Camera decision

It's down to a Canon EOS400D or a Nikon D40x.

Anyone got one?

no, but ive heard they are both brilliant camera's,

id go for nikon myself, only as ive used nikons in the past, and know them to be reliable and take good pictures,

i have a friend who is a profesional photographer, and i asked him the exact same question,
he says they are both as good as each other, and take whichever one you can get cheaper.

Not got a D40x, but got a D40, same camera apart from the D40x is a 10mp I think.

I had a good look when I bought mine, I thought the Nikon gave a slightly sharper picture and the colour depth was better on it to.

Personally I'd go for the Nikon. I'm really pleased with mine.

I took these with my Nikon :

Any existing lenses? Sam and I have the Canon, which is great. From the reviews I've read it is a case of which is cheaper.

Oh, and how big are your hands. If you have large hands you may find the D400 a little on the small side. (Although with the extra battery grip, i find it fine.)

Ed, I have the EOS350D which is fantastic, the 400 is even better. In fact I'm considering adding a 400 to the camera bag as I've done a couple of weddings lately and I really need a 2nd body.

I have a number of images from my hols that I'll try and put up this evening...

Got an EOS400D, and have tried the Nikon (pretty sure it was the D40), and I'm pleased I went with the Canon. It's more user friendly and I think it might have more features too (like depth of field preview).

Im no expert but I believe the d40x has some concerns with slightly softer images due to being a 10mp model, having said that unless you are blowing up to A3 size or you,re a pro or perfectionist you probably wont notice any difference. Personally Id go for the Nikon cos I have had loads of them 3 F50s, 2 x F80,S (brilliant btw ) F90X, FM2N plus 3 canon Eos 600,s. They are all top kit.
Good luck

Have you read the reviews on www.dpreview.com? If not, then do so before making a decision.

Both cameras will be fantastic, though I've heard that Nikon have better build quality.
