Default Peace is disturbed

It is Armed Forces Weekend at Cleethorpes and, for the second day, the Typhoon demonstrator has been showing what large amounts of power in a small airframe can do. I live about half a mile from the seafront but as the Typhoon turned away I could see the orange glow from the afterburners followed by the intense noise that rattled your bones.

Watching an aircraft go from near stall speed into a vertical climb is impressive though.

Unusually, this year, they had the Spitfire and Hurricane on their own and then later the Lancaster which was tailed by the Typhoon (flying in a very nose up attitude, presumably to keep pace). After the Lancaster departed the noise began.

Default Re: Peace is disturbed

The noise and spectacle of a fighter on full reheat is something else, isn't it?

When I was a nipper in the 70s, my uncle worked at the British Aerospace factory at Brough. They had an annual airshow and we used to get special tickets. Lightnings, Phantoms, F-111s and Buccaneers all giving it full noise.

I clearly remember the Lightning and Phantom both going near-vertical almost as soon as their nose-wheels were off the ground, and the cones of blue flame from the tailpipes. There was also the Vulcan lifting off with its 4 Olympus engines screaming. As you say, the noise shook you physically.
