Default Nigel Eaton - Hurdy Gurdy

This chap is staggeringly good and this piece of playing is genuinely wonderful.

That is good. Trying to work out if he's using a loop pedal to layer the parts.

He's pre-recorded the base and chordal accompaniment, the tune and rhythmic drone are played live.

Love the sound of the amplified instrument. It has a mean edge to it.

They're a medieval instrument Bibs. You can see one in the hell panel from the painting "The Garden of Earthly Delights" by Hieronymous Bosch, C1500. The instrument was also widely used along with a form of bagpipes by musicians in the Auvergne region of France.

Are you aware of the Nyckelharpa? A 16 string instrument that uses a bow and keys that probably predates Medieval times (Probably Swedish in origin.) A fine exponent is Vicki Swann who plays in a duo with Johhny Dyer, they are very good. Here is a 'short' of Vicki's playing

Known about the Nyckelharpa for quite a long time (I'm a folkie, what did you expect?) and been watching it growing in popularity again. Lovely sound, but the excitement of the gurdy wins me over.
