Cleaning gummed up carbs? Now runs but popping
Right the SV has been stood for about a year now and not really been run properly just left to idle.
Had a problem last year when I got water in the carbs and then found the tap/filter in the tank was all gummed up so cleaned it up but still got running issues. It will idle fine but if i try and rev it it just dies, increasing the revsx slowly can get it up to about 4k but then dies. Im guessing the carbs are gummed up as well. Is there anything I can add into the petrol to clean them out or am I going to need to strip them to clean them?

Re: Gummed up carbs???
In my experience the only way is to get in there with the carb cleaner and compressed air, there are some fuel system cleaners that are quite effective, but if something is actually blocked, they'll never get to where they're needed to do their stuff.

Re: Cleaning gummed up carbs?
Cheers Squid, I was guessing that was going to be the answer but thought I'd ask anyway.
I'll get the toolbox out then, was just feeling a bit lazy! lol

Re: Cleaning gummed up carbs?
If they've had water in and not used regularly since, you may well find white alum oxide crud rather than gum from dried fuel, and normal carb cleaners won't shift the white stuff. Sounds like a strip to me too.

Re: Cleaning gummed up carbs?
They didn't have water in for long as I drained them quite quickly.
Any common problems I might come across when I strip them?

Re: Cleaning gummed up carbs?
Well I spent an hour or so cleaning the carbs this evening with some Wynns carb cleaner and they look lovely now. Got interrupted by kids bathtime so only managed to get them back on the bike and get it all back together.

Re: Cleaning gummed up carbs?
That'll learn ya, put some fuel stabilizer in next time & run the bike so its in the whole system.
Or drain the bowls I don't know what's better
