Default Corrosion on Engine Casing

Hi All.

Arrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhh!

The ravages of winter have have got hold of my bike. I was washing it a couple of weeks ago and I noticed that the right hand engine casing had loads of corrosion on it on the leading beveled edge. This is causing the paint to bubble.

If this has happened to your SV what did you do about it and how much did it set you back?

I guess the casing has got to come off and either be rubbed down or sand blasted and then re-painted. Where can I get paint to match the engine colour, will the nearest colour match from Halfrauds do?

I have noticed that the fork lowers have started to go as well.

Arrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhh!

Never had a problem with the engine casing, but read here for one way to deal with the forks

You can buy aluminium spray paint (high temp stuff - anywhere that deals in car/bike repairs/mods should have it or be able to get it for you). Still got some left over from my Kwak ER5 that did the same thing on the engine cases. Riding a Kwak or Suzuki all year round, you can expect the finish to go bad. Honda and Yamaha are a bit better though not immune.

The spray paint won't be a perfect finish though if you do it right it looks better than the corrosion. Best bet is to use something like ACF50 on there after you've ashed it; that stops it happening in the first place/getting any worse. My SV is filthy minging but underneath the dirt she's corrosion free...
